Environmentalism is a human movement, concerned with the conservation and improvement of the natural environment from an ethical and political perspective. Human beings are viewed as a part of nature rather than overseers. In essence, to care for the environment is to care for human beings. We cannot live without the survival of the natural environment.

A conceptual view of the earth divided into five sections

What is Earth Divided?

It is a multidisciplinary project that aims to highlight a rising global concern of the planet. It developed from a single artistic expression into various forms of visual communication all with an emphasis on environmentalism.

Dividing the planet

If the world could be divided, there’d be five areas within:

  • Power
  • Food
  • Trees
  • Water
  • Animals

These areas are of a major concern to environmentalists and conservationists throughout the world. Their efforts have reached down into homes around the world, highlighting causes and issues that seem daunting and impossible.

It’s critically important that efforts continue. Earth Divided hopes to continue the reminder that the natural environment cannot keep us, if we do not keep it.

Underneath Earth Divided

Earth Divided began as a micro-project in early 2009, when I (Liam Moore) was creating pieces of graphic-design/art. The pieces reflected current events in the media and blogosphere and since then, two of the original pieces grew into a much bigger picture, project and idea. The pieces reflected environmental concerns on a global scale, it was at this point I asked the following question,

"Is it possible in Belfast to promote positive awareness of environmentalism through graphic design?"

In response to this question I designed a series of five logos to represent one of the five areas of Earth Divided. From this, I had stencils made for graffiti and canvas printing use.

The five logos that represent Power, Food, Trees, Water and Animals.

Some feedback I received was positive and encouraging. Most people liked the idea of addressing environmental issues in a non-traditional way. However some felt the need to graffiti walls in Belfast was causing a nuisance to businesses, residents and the public. I felt the need to get out and voice an opinion was crucial to the Earth Divided cause.

Giving to Charity

In an effort to promote environmentalism awareness, I created a series of canvas prints, each with their individual Earth Divided logo spray-painted on. My efforts through this are to sell the canvases and donate 70% to a charity, respective to the cause I’m trying to highlight in that Earth Divided area. Purrchase these one-off prints.
